The Beatrice Pinafore

[107 items are in stock]

Beatrice is a great cover-all type of garment. There are no darts as it is a very loose fitting garment and designed to be worn over a T-shirt or sweatshirt, and the cross over at the back is enough to prevent the back gaping open.

The large curved patch pockets are bound at the top edge.

Version 1 is finished off with a bound edge all the way round.

Version 2 is finished off with a small hem

Version 3 is lined with a contrast fabric to enclose all the raw edges

Suitable Fabrics

Light to medium weight fabrics such as printed craft cotton, linen, poplin, denim, corduroy.

The binding can be made from ready-made bias binding and you will need 7 - 8m.

If using 140cm wide fabric there will be enough spare fabric left to cut the bias strips for the binding.

This is a brilliant pattern, well written and easy to follow, I really enjoyed making mine. Thanks
starstarstarstarstarSimply wonderful! 22nd Mar 2015
Purchased the Beatrice pattern on Saturday at the sewing for pleasure show. I have always been fearful of patterns, filling me with absolute dread, trying to understand and work with tissue paper. I'm thrilled that I have found Sew Me Something. The instructions are so clear and have been carefully thought through. The packaging and the patterns are a wonderful quality and design. Looking forward to my first clothing project sewing alone... Will make wonderful gifts also! Thank you x

Bought this pattern on ebay, and have made 3 lined versions in 2 days. Can be worn both ways so ideal over a vest for holiday.
starstarstarstarstarBrilliant, first try at making a dress/pinny 30th Mar 2015
It was absolutely great came up bigger than pattern sizes suggests so even better had to adjust and take in. Made in purple linen. Thankyou ladies for your help on the day in choosing my first project. Will be back for more!!!!

This was the first SMS pattern I made up. Making up the Beatrice pinafore was very straightforward - I used a plain linen fabric with a contrasting bias trim (version 1) and the only problem I had was getting the pockets level. However, this had more to do with me missing the pattern markings (because they were on the wrong side of the fabric) than the actual pattern. I did need to make some adjustments to sizing - because I'm large busted and used to sizing up , I choose to make the size that matched my bust measurements and ignored the ease measurements. The finished size was far too big for my personal taste, so I trimmed an inch from each side seam. Better that than making it too small though! Watch out for the crossover at the back when trying on - get the shoulders back to front when turning to the right side and it gets a little muddled! Overall, I'm very pleased with the finished result. Have worn and recieved compliments.

I made the medium size pinafore and it looked like a denim bucket with shoulder straps. I fiddled around a lot and eventually made it fit, but it's now an odd shape under the arms. It is marked as a beginner's pattern, but the instructions could do with more details, especially when it comes to the curved neckline with the 1cm single seam - another design flaw. The pattern is so nicely presented, although it's made from a thick paper which bears the creasing from being folded up, making it hard to cut out. I did write to raise these points but received no reply, hence the review.

It was so easy to make up and the instructions were straightforward to follow. I used the bias binding method to finish the edge and that worked very well. Very pleased will look forward to making another one now.

Very easy pattern, very quick to make. I got so carried away that I made my own binding and bound the whole thing which was way easier than I ever could have imagined. Want to do 2 more versions now in other fabrics!
starstarstarno starno starVery easy to make 31st Jan 2016
Clear instructions and easy to make, perfect for a beginner. However I agree with other comments that if you go by bust size as I did. You end up with a very large tent! As I lined mine, I've got rather a lot of unpicking to do now, but it's very easy, just wish had made a size smaller for once!!

I agree with others who have commented an the generous size. I made the medium but soon realised it was going to be far too big so unpicked it and recut it as a small, still a little on the generous size. As I'm not much over 5 ft I could do with it being shorter too. However, I will wear it lots. Personally I prefer the Kate dress - made 2 and I'm planning more.

great pattern , have made it in denim , looks very professional . the size is as you stated loose and with enough room for a sweaty underneath. love it .
starstarstarstarstarGreat quick project 2nd Jun 2016
Made version 3 of Beatrice. It is accurately described and I anticipated a loose fit from the ease measurements. A quick sew and clear instructions led to a happy pinafore wearer.

I absolutely love this design. The first one I made for myself and I loved the wriggle factor of the medium size (I wear a UK14). I got my Mum to try it on with a view to making her one and she decided that she would like the one that she had tried on (Mum is 84 and a size 22). Who was I to argue? There was no draping of the back pieces, just a very neat closure. Beatrice is the most sensible shape and easy to wear. I bound the edges of that pinny. My next one, for me, I made in size small, a much better fit but even so I feel I would be just as comfy in the extra small although I love how the drape of the back looks in the size medium. I overlocked the edges and turned them in on my version, I love the result. I have now purchased the child's version and am looking forward to making outfits for my little granddaughters :)
